Planning Comments

We organise our planning comments by financial year (April to March). The latest comments are at the top of the list below, which is continuously updated throughout the financial year.

We have a small volunteer team who review the weekly planning list published by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, focussing on applications likely to have a major and significant impact. We welcome contact from parishes, local residents and other interested parties bringing to our attention significant applications within or close to the National Park. We also respond to major public consultations affecting the National Park, often in partnership with Campaign for National Parks and kindred organisations.

In May 2024, we, Friends of the Lake District and Campaign for National Parks each made a formal complaint to the Planning Inspector about their decision to allow on appeal an application to build a telecoms mast on Low Barbon Fell (S/05/49). Our grounds for the formal complaint were that the Planning Inspector had not “properly followed Government planning policy or guidance, relevant legislation and (internal) procedural guidance”. 

We received a response from the Planning Inspectorate in August but we believe that response to be inadequate. The next step was to submit a further complaint under the Stage 2 process – we each did that in September, see downloads below. 

We know that the appeal decision cannot be changed. Nevertheless we are seeking reassurances that arrangements have been put in place so that all Planning Inspectors are fully aware of the particular planning protections that apply in national parks and other protected landscapes. It’s great that colleagues across three campaigning charities have collaborated on this complex but important topic – we’ll keep you posted!
