Do you want to help build a sustainable future for the Yorkshire Dales?
If so, we are looking for a new trustee to take on the role of volunteer Treasurer. This exciting role with our environmental campaigning charity would be perfect for an energetic, environmentally minded individual with good analytical and numeracy skills.
Our outgoing Treasurer, Ian Harrison who is stepping down after completing his second term of office, said: “It has been an absolute privilege to be an integral part of Friends of the Dales for the last six years. The charity has delivered some really tangible benefits to the long-term sustainability of the Yorkshire Dales, including raising awareness of the pollution caused by planting trees with plastic guards – a campaign that has now gathered momentum and credence at a national level. We’ve also made real progress in protecting the little biodiversity the Dales has left, by campaigning for the better management of roadside verges.
“During my time as Treasurer myself and the team have been successful in reviewing our business model, strengthening our financial management systems and exploring new ways for people to support our charity. It is a really exciting time to volunteer with Friends of the Dales, so I would encourage anyone with a passion for nature and the environment and a head for figures to get in touch and find out more.”
The role of Treasurer is key, working closely with the charity’s Chair of Trustees and Executive Director. The Treasurer is responsible for ensuring that the Board carries out its financial and governance obligations and that the Charity complies with the requirements of Company and Charity law. The role also encompasses corporate strategy and line management responsibilities.
Both the Board and the Finance & Governance Committee of which the treasurer is a key part, meet quarterly. Meetings normally take place in Gargrave on weekdays during normal working hours although these timings may be reviewed in the future. Further ad hoc meetings with staff and Trustees take place as needed, however regular use is made of video calls.
The Board is keen to broaden the diversity of the Charity’s Trustees and so welcomes expressions of interest from people of any background, with applications from minority ethnic groups and from younger people especially encouraged. This role could provide a development opportunity for an individual looking to acquire or develop experience of the charitable sector.
