Introducing Our New Executive Director

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Sophie Amos as our new Executive Director.

Sophie brings more than 25 years of experience in the charitable sector, including eight years as CEO of two environmental education charities, Roots4Life and Creekside Discovery Centre. Earlier in her career, Sophie held senior leadership roles in fundraising, campaigning and communications with international NGOs, including Amnesty International and HelpAge International.

Having moved to Calderdale, West Yorkshire last summer, Sophie has already established strong connections in the region through her work and volunteering with Slow The Flow, supporting nature-based solutions to reduce flood risk.

Sophie said: “I grew up on an arable farm in Kent so rural life and communities were very much part of my childhood and have been an inspiration since. Every family holiday was spent in the West Cumbrian borders. I climbed my first hill, Catbells, aged 5, bribed by the prospect of seeing Beatrix Potter’s fictional hedgehog, Mrs Tiggy-Winkle. I also continue to enjoy walking to this day – but without the need for bribes!

“A family favourite was the walk around Haweswater reservoir in the hope to see the then only resident golden eagle in England. In my early 20s on a cold Boxing Day, I was finally rewarded, as the golden eagle flew low over Shap Abbey. This sighting is one I will continue to cherish when working to increase awareness of raptor persecution and protection through the Eyes on the Skies campaign.

“Exploring parts of the Yorkshire Dales I am less familiar with will be a highlight of my new role. I hope to combine such exploration with my professional experience: working to widen access, whilst also protecting the local communities and economies that live and work in the Yorkshire Dales.”

Jonathan Riley Chair of Trustees added, “We are thrilled to welcome Sophie to the team and look forward to the experience, vision and leadership she will bring as we continue our work to protect and enhance the Yorkshire Dales for people, nature and future generations.”

Sophie will commence her new role in August.
